Hundred Dollar Hikes

Have you ever had a hundred dollar idea while in the shower? Or a thousand dollar idea while on a walk around the block? Or a million dollar idea while flying cross country?
I know I have.
Find Profits Outside
Often, my best trading ideas come when I’m walking or hiking on a mountain trail. Most definitely, I do my best thinking and strategizing when I’m on my feet.
Fresh air, gentle breezes, the smell of pine needles, the sound of birds, and the crunch of dirt under my feet inspire limitless thoughts of unbounded stock market profits.
Outside, under the trees, in the tall grasses, along the rock walls, through the dry creek beds, and across the wild flower meadows is where my best brain storming gets done. There’s something so completely and wonderfully powerful about being in nature.
No matter how much the market tired me before heading out, I nearly always felt more energized and inspired after two hours of elevated heart rate on a trail—and usually better then I’ve felt all week!!
One of the many great things about living in Colorado is the ability to find a trail where we can be the only people for miles. Where we can commune with nature. Where we can deeply and completely dig into our thoughts and ideas. Undistracted.
For my money, there is no better setting for inspiring new strategies, working out new approaches to changing market conditions, and exploring new trading concepts.
The Trader's Struggle
Traders know that trading exaggerates any weaknesses we have in other parts of our lives. Trading exposes our inner demons. If we struggle with patience, discipline, consistency, energy, commitment, self-sabotage, self-awareness, or self consciousness, trading will bring those issues to the forefront. Sometimes dramatically so.
One of the hardest things for me has always been accountability. As an Independent Trader for most of my career, the only person who attempted to hold me accountable was me. But as the fox guarding the henhouse of my emotions and discipline, you can imagine how that went.
Outside of trading, another thing I’ve struggled with is maintaining a commitment to exercise and the outdoors. Living in Colorado, I’m blessed with some of this country’s most beautiful natural environment, right outside my door. Yet, I don’t set aside the time often enough to get the full benefit. And I need to.
Getting out with trader friends of mine on an energetic hike has done wonders in helping me make headway here.
